Update May 16, 2008
I wanted to let all of you know that Ed passed away last night. His visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home (Ozark) from 2p to 4p on Sunday. His funeral will be graveside at Martin Cemetery on the east side of 160 between Highlandville and Spokane on Monday at 10am.
Update May 15, 2008
Ed had started building a home and it is his desire to finish it for his wife and family. He is not going to be able to as his cancer has now spread and his vital organs are failing. He is now at home under family and Hospice care. Can you help? Possibly with something for his benefit, or his house, as we at Long’s are going to see it through.
It is with a heavy heart that we come to you today. A very close friend of ours is going through a tough time and needs our help.
As many of you know, Ed Engelke was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in February of 2007. Over the last year, he has gone through numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He has taken these treatments in both Springfield and at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. The good news is the tumors could not hold up to his treatments. The not so good news is his cancer has mastasized in his abdomen. The doctor in Texas says there is another type of chemotherapy he wants to try. At this point, as you can imagine, it's very hard for Ed and his family to keep a positive attitude. If he does decide to get this other chemotherapy, he will be going to Texas again for his treatment. His wife, Darlene, will have to remain here to work and his 13 year old daughter, Caitriona, will have to stay here for school. We can only imagine how hard it is to go through something like this, but to go through it without having your family close by would be devastating to us.
Over the last year, Ed has had to be off work a lot. Whether he's had to go to Texas or Springfield for his treatments, the chemotherapy takes a toll on his body. He's been quite the trooper however. Anytime he could come to work, he has been here. He's helped out a lot in the office, as much as he can on the service calls, worked on bids, and even helps Don out in the shop.
This entire experience has drained Ed and his family physically, emotionally, and financially. This is where you all come in. We all need to pull together and show Ed just how much we all really do care about him. We are putting on a benefit for Ed and his family on June 28th at the Nixa City Park (by Price Cutter) from 12p until ??? We are in need on all types of donations that we can use in our raffle/auction. Monetary donations to be used for items would also be appreciated. If you’d like to bring something for the BBQ or bake sale as well, just let us know.
We will be putting on a BBQ with all kinds of fixin's, a bake sale, a raffle/auction, and possibly door prizes.
Please do what you feel in your heart. Anything will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
